Zoom is a popular teeth whitening procedure for a good reason: it really works. Dr. Tostado is a cosmetic dentist who can offer you this bleaching treatment to help you get a brighter smile.
What Is Zoom Whitening?
The Zoom whitening system typically involves both a peroxide-based gel bleach and a blue LED light. The gel soaks into the microscopic pores on your enamel where it then goes through a chemical reaction that releases oxygen. These oxygen molecules are what lift stains and lighten pigment in your teeth, making them whiter. The LED light is used during in-office whitening treatments to help activate the bleaching gel and enhance the whitening effect.
Zoom whitening will permanently lighten your teeth, but you’ll still have to practice good oral hygiene or do some maintenance bleaching to prevent new stains.
The Zoom Whitening Procedure: What to Expect
Dr. Tostado offers both in-office and at-home Zoom treatments.
If you get your teeth bleached in-office with Zoom, then the process will look like this:
- You’ll wear cheek retractors to keep your teeth dry and exposed to the light
- A dental assistant will apply a protective putty to your gums
- You’ll wear a pair of protective glasses to keep the light out of your eyes
- The bleaching gel is painted onto the surfaces of your teeth
- The Zoom LED light is directed onto your teeth for several minutes at a time until your teeth are the shade you want
Your teeth may be a bit sensitive during or immediately after whitening your teeth with Zoom. But this sensitivity is manageable and fades with time. Dr. Tostado can recommend some desensitizing treatments if you need them.
For at-home Zoom treatments, you’ll be supplied with syringes of bleaching gel, a set of customized whitening trays, and instructions on how to use them. There is no LED light involved with this method. This take-home option allows you to whiten your teeth gradually and in the comfort of your own home at a time that’s convenient for you. You’ll apply a very small amount of gel in your trays and then wear them as directed until your teeth are as white as you want.
