What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry, also known as conscious dental sedation, helps patients feel relaxed and calm during dental visits. For those who feel nervous, anxious, or fearful about visiting the dentist, this approach can be an option to make the experience easier. Sedation methods at 5 Star Dental Group range from oral sedation, where a patient takes medication by mouth, to IV sedation, where medication is delivered directly into the bloodstream, giving a deeper relaxation effect. Our goal is to ensure you feel at ease while staying awake, aware, and comfortable throughout your treatment. Contact our San Antonio, TX office to schedule a consultation to explore sedation options so you can make an informed choice.
How Does Sedation Dentistry Work?
Before treatment, you may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours, and afterward, it's recommended to have a friend or family member accompany you to your appointment because you may feel drowsy after the procedure. The main types of sedation used in most practices are:
- Oral sedation: With oral sedation, patients take a prescribed medication before the procedure. This form of sedation can make you feel drowsy and calm but allows you to stay fully conscious. It is ideal for patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety, helping them feel less tense and more cooperative throughout the visit. Many patients report feeling as though time passes quickly and often have only a light memory of the experience.
- IV sedation: IV sedation is a stronger form of conscious sedation that takes effect more quickly than oral sedation. Administered directly into the bloodstream, it can provide a deeper relaxation while still allowing you to respond to simple directions. The effects of IV sedation are almost immediate, making it a preferred option for patients with severe dental anxiety or those undergoing longer or more complex procedures.

The best! 100% recommend
Always the best professional care!
My husband and I have been going here for about 25 years. They are always friendly, on time and professional, from Mary Jo at the front desk to every single staff member. Dr Tostado is wonderful, knowledgeable with extreme attention to detail. He communicates every aspect of your care. He makes us feel comfortable Dr. Acuna gave me my numbing medicine on my last visit and I didn’t feel any discomfort during its administration and afterwards. She was excellent and was so gentle. They are upfront with all aspects of your care, very ethical and we have never been disappointed. The office is beautiful too, very calm and very clean. I would recommend this practice all the time.
