Biomimetic dentistry is restorative dentistry using materials that mimic nature to strengthen teeth while using minimally invasive techniques. Biomimetic dentistry focuses on preventive care, conservative treatment, and preserving natural tooth structure. Dr. Gilberto Tostado and Dr. Karina Acuña of San Antonio practice biomimetic dentistry for minimally invasive, highly aesthetic dental care.
What Can You Expect from Biomimetic Dentistry?
The principles of biomimetic dentistry are in harmony with holistic or biological dentistry. It is also called “additive dentistry,” because it focuses on preserving natural tooth structure whenever possible. The materials that are used for restoration will also be biocompatible, and the results will be crafted to look as if you didn’t have any work done.
Preventive Care
Part of this treatment philosophy includes an emphasis on preventive care. Prevention is enhanced by early detection, aided by technology. Regular maintenance at 5 Star Dental Group includes:
- Digital x-rays
- Intraoral pictures with a digital camera
- Laser-assisted dental hygiene
- Oral cancer screening with fluorescence technology that highlights abnormalities
Minimally Invasive Dentistry
Minimally invasive dentistry removes damage or decay while preserving healthy tooth structure and restoring function.
Cavities and fillings
After removing tooth decay, Dr. Tostado or Dr. Acuña will use a composite filling or a ceramic onlay to protect the tooth. Restorations will be bonded, so that they strengthen rather than weaken your tooth.
Severely decayed or damaged teeth
Rather than place crowns, where we can we will use ceramic onlays that preserve more of the natural tooth structure. A crown involves shaving down an entire tooth. Biomimetic dentistry, however, removes the damage while carefully preserving tooth structure. Only the damaged or weakened parts of the tooth are covered, and we keep the margins of the restoration above the gumline, which minimizes any irritation to the gums. Read our onlay page for more details about this treatment.
Functional, Highly Aesthetic Results
Biomimetic dental restorations replicate natural tooth function, durability, and aesthetics.
Function and Durability
Dr. Tostado and Dr. Acuña maintain an on-site dental lab with an inventory of biocompatible composites, ceramics, and other materials to customize your restorations. The high-quality materials have these benefits:
- Reinforce teeth
- Increase bonding strength
- Decrease tooth stress
- Save you money in the long term
Aesthetics
Dr. Tostado and Dr. Acuña select and manipulate composites and ceramics to mimic tooth shade, variations in translucence, and luster. You will not be able to distinguish the restoration from your natural tooth structure.
